The Hurricane MK II flew for the first time on June 11th 1940. The new model was powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin XX engine with a two stage supercharger for improved performance at altitude. With the war well underway, the second series of the Mk II had reinforced fuselages to accommodate a new wing, this had universal attachment points for drop tanks, bombs or other underwing stores.
